A Day in the Studio: From a Lump of Clay to Your Doorstep

We often get messages asking what a typical day looks like at Sree Studio. Given that every piece is made, photographed, packed, and shipped by one person, we thought it was time to walk you through it.

It Begins at the Wheel

The day usually begins at the wheel. Clay is weighed, centered, and shaped by hand — a process that demands complete focus, since even a slight imbalance can throw off the entire piece. Depending on what is being made — a mug, a vase, or a bowl — this stage alone can take anywhere from a few minutes to over an hour for more detailed pieces like our tile mugs.

The Waiting Game: Drying

Once shaped, the piece needs to dry slowly and evenly. This is not a step that can be rushed with heat or shortcuts, since drying too quickly often leads to cracks. This is also the stage where most of the patience of pottery-making truly comes in — simply waiting.

The First Firing: Bisque

After drying comes the first firing, known as the bisque firing, which hardens the clay into a more durable form. Once cooled, the piece is glazed by hand — a step that decides the final colour and finish. Glazing is deceptively tricky, since the glaze often looks completely different in its raw state compared to how it turns out after the final firing. This is where experience and a bit of intuition built over time truly matter.

The Final Firing: Where the Magic Happens

The second and final firing is where the real transformation happens. What goes in as a dull, chalky piece comes out glossy, coloured, and complete. This is often the most satisfying part of the entire process — and also the most nerve-wracking, since this is the stage where any hidden flaw finally reveals itself.

From Studio to Your Doorstep

Once a piece has passed through all these stages successfully, it moves to photography, listing, packaging, and finally shipping — all handled personally to ensure that what you see online is exactly what reaches your home.

This entire process — from a lump of clay to a finished piece in your hands — usually takes several days, sometimes longer depending on the complexity of the design. It is a slow process by choice, since rushing any stage compromises the quality and character of the final piece.
